What It Is
The FIRE number calculator estimates the target portfolio needed for financial independence based on annual spending and withdrawal assumptions.
It also estimates how many years it may take to reach that target from your current portfolio and yearly contributions.
How It Works
First, FIRE target is computed as annual expenses divided by safe withdrawal rate (SWR). Then portfolio growth is simulated yearly using return and contribution assumptions.
If the simulated portfolio reaches target within 100 years, the calculator returns years-to-FIRE and projected portfolio at that point.
Formula
FIRE Number = Annual Expenses / SWR. With SWR at 4%, this is often approximated as 25x annual expenses.
Portfolio progression each year follows next = current*(1+return)+annual contribution.
Example
With $60,000 annual expenses and 4% SWR, target is $1.5M. Starting portfolio and annual savings determine time to reach this target under assumed return.
Use conservative return and SWR inputs when planning.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 4% SWR always safe?
No. Safe rates vary by horizon, allocation, and market conditions.
Does this model taxes?
No, taxes and fees are excluded unless adjusted in your inputs.
Can it fail to reach FIRE?
Yes, if contributions/returns are too low relative to target.
